Why we write the IEB (Independent Examinations Board) examinations:

T he IEB is an assessment body accredited by Umalusi – the South African statutory body responsible for quality assurance for school and adult assessments. The IEB is internationally benchmarked against UK NARIC and it is our belief that the comprehensive testing, careful marking and moderated examinations probe our pupils’ understanding, fairly and accurately assessing their subject knowledge. We are confident that the final marks a pupil receives in matric are valid and authentic. Students with excellent IEB results are regularly accepted into tertiary institutions overseas (including Ivy League and Oxbridge institutions) without taking further requirements such A Levels.

Further, the IEB, as the name implies, is an independent system, providing an alternate voice to the National Department of Education on curriculum and assessment matters, which we value and support. Only 10 000 candidates, mostly from Independent schools in Southern Africa, write the examination and the marking of Matric Examinations is of the highest possible standard. Staff from both the DSG and St Andrew’s College are actively involved in policy making, National Subject Fora, setting examinations and marking examinations for the IEB.
