I joined the College staff in April 2002, my first teaching appointment, after turning down a contract with accounting firm KPMG in Johannesburg. Having studied to become a Chartered Accountant at Rhodes University (1999 – 2001), it was a life-changing decision for me, and one that I have not regretted. I have since completed my PGCE (2003) through UNISA and currently teach accounting to Grade 9-12 learners.
I grew up in Grahamstown, was schooled at St Andrew’s Prep and St Andrew’s College and am a product of Upper House, making it even more exciting for me to be back here. After completing Grade 12 I spent a year at Bedford School in England, helping out at their International Study Centre which caters for overseas students who come to learn English before being allowed to make the move to mainstream schools and classes. Meeting learners from many of the Asian countries, Russia, Spain, Brazil, Angola, Yugoslavia, and many other European countries made this an interesting experience and it was wonderful to see learners move on and flourish in the main schools.
Sport has always played a large part in my life and during my time at College I have been MIC of squash, cricket, athletics and golf. I have coached the 1st XI cricket for six years, and currently coach the Junior Colts A side. I still play when I can in the local Farmers’ League and have also represented the Eastern Province Country Districts team. I currently also coach the under 15 A rugby side. When possible I play as much competitive golf as I can and am certainly looking forward to opening of the new course in Grahamstown.
It is wonderful to be back in Upper, to see how things have evolved and changed for the better over time. The boys are hugely passionate and loyal towards the House; they want to be here and they want to excel in all that they do. The challenge for all of us is to get the boys to channel this passion in the right direction, to respect and celebrate each other’s differences and to become well-rounded individuals who are honourable, humble, show integrity, and are always willing to serve others.
