Become part of our history

St Andrew’s College (1855), St Andrew’s Preparatory School (1885) and The Diocesan School for Girls (1874) are historic, independent schools that are highly regarded for their excellence in all spheres of education.

The schools lie adjacent to Rhodes University, thereby forming a unique educational belt in the historical city of Grahamstown (Makhanda).

The spiritual life of the schools is a key component, and regular services are held in the chapels, conducted by the school Chaplains.

Our excellent full-time boarding facilities become a home-from-home to pupils from over 22 different countries. A full seven-day week programme includes academic, cultural, sporting and spiritual activities.

The schools enjoy excellent IT facilities housed in libraries, computer laboratories and in the boarding houses. The Mathematics Centre has every tool necessary in understanding the art of Mathematics. Advanced Programme Mathematics and Advanced Programme English are also offered as extra subjects, and our pupils participate in both the Maths and English Olympiads.

Pupils write the Independent Examination Board matriculation examinations and Cambridge A-Levels.

Our campus boasts the most admired state-of-the-art Design and Technology Centre in South Africa. Within this Centre, pupils engage in different activities such as drawing, product design, architecture, interior design, technological design, fashion design, food technology, electronics and robotics.

Our widely acclaimed David Wynne Music School, dance studio and Indoor Aquatic Centre and high performance sports training centre are hives of activity.

The schools are proud of their sporting achievements. With excellent coaching and facilities, many past pupils excel in regional and national teams, and some have participated in the Olympic Games.

Numerous school clubs encourage forward thinking. They include debating, current affairs, chess, outdoor, Student Christian Associations and First Aid. Drama plays an important role and at least one major theatrical production is staged per annum.

Community Engagement plays a vital role of the ethos of the schools. Pupils are encouraged to become involved in numerous programmes to engage with the greater Grahamstown community. Many of our pupils participate in the President’s Award.

St Andrew’s College, DSG and St Andrew’s Preparatory School are happy, closely connected schools where pupils thrive in a vibrant and safe environment, supported by a foundation of excellence and Christian values.

Grahamstown (Makhanda) is home to the National Arts Festival and the annual Science Festival and pupils enjoy easy access to these events as well as many other exciting cultural events that are part of the fabric of this little town.
