Afrikaans Bekgeveg Competition

‘Discussions are always preferable to arguments. While arguments focus on determining who is right, discussions aim to uncover what is right.’
On Wednesday, June 5th, and Thursday, June 6th, the St Andrew’s College and DSG Afrikaans department hosted the annual Bekgeveg competition. This event is a highly anticipated highlight on our calendar, providing a platform for learners to showcase their Afrikaans public speaking skills and engage in friendly competition.
Parents and staff in attendance were pleasantly surprised by the well-researched speeches and high-quality presentation. Topics ranged from ‘How do we make Makhanda a town to be proud of?’ to ‘Is there a place for initiation in schools?’ and from ‘Losing is sometimes better than winning’ to ‘Stories as integral parts of our cultures’ as well as ‘The positive aspects of peer pressure’.
The results were as follows:
Juniors:
3. Felix Jackson
2. Galliano Boni
1. Alex Booth
Seniors:
2. Grant McJannet
1. Jean de Villiers & Lourens Coetzee (shared)
A sincere thank you goes out to the respective panels of judges, who had the near-impossible task of selecting the winners. I also want to express my gratitude to the Afrikaans department, as well as the staff and parents who attended the events. However, our deepest appreciation goes to the learners whose insightful and engaging opinions truly enriched the event.
– Ms René Barnardt
