Over the Rainbow Concert

OVER THE RAINBOW – 2 June 2024

“Tonight, we celebrate the powerful intersection of music and pride, a relationship that stretches far back into history. One of the reasons I think Music is so powerful is because of its ability to convey what words often cannot. This evening, we are not only listening to a collection of breathtaking pieces but also a collection of feelings and experiences. I ask that as you listen to each performance, you reflect on how it makes you feel and to connect those feelings to experiences of your own.

Tonight is also about inclusion. Pride means unapologetically being yourself, but it also means standing up for those who can’t. I’m sure many of you know the feeling of not belonging—a sinking feeling you wouldn’t wish on anyone. So, let us embrace this “Over the Rainbow” concert not just as a celebration, but as a commitment to making our community more inclusive for everyone. Enjoy the evening!”

These were the words of Tom Clucas, opening Sunday night’s Over the Rainbow concert held for the first time at the Drill Hall this year. The evening was framed by Maya Angelou’s poem “On the pulse of morning” interrupted only by the soundscapes of instruments and song.

Well done to James Barrow and the Cultural Committee for organising a beautiful and meaningful celebration of the all-embracing pride and power we can draw from trees, music, words, and each other.
