ROWING: Boat Naming Ceremony

As part of the annual rowing dinner, the Rowing Club took the opportunity to name three newly acquired coaching boats in recognition of three of our school drivers who have each made a tremendous contribution to St Andrew’s College and DSG rowing through their dedication to driving for off-campus rowing training and tours over many years.

Alton Jacobs (11 years’ service), Luyanda Valela (9 years’ service), and Luthando Matebeni (7 years’ service).

These three gentlemen have been a completely indispensable part of our rowing team. From the day-to-day driving to the Kowie River or out to Settlers Dam to the long hours behind the wheel on regatta days to the Buffalo and SA Champs tours, where they are on duty and perform a variety of tasks from dawn to dusk for many days at a time and of course, the unplanned moments like a trailer or vehicle that needs to be fixed on the road, these men have been up for the challenge without a moment’s hesitation.

If anyone could ever want an example of how to safely navigate our roads, with all the challenges they bring, be it potholes, animals, or other drivers, you could do no better than to ride with any one of them and watch how they go about their job and see the pride they take in it. As a club and as a school we are truly fortunate to have Alton, Luyanda, and Luthando as part of our team and for this reason, we have chosen to honour them with the naming of these three coaching launches after them.
