Vides 1st Team Water Polo Tournament

The 1st team embarked on a journey to East London for the annual Vides water polo tournament at Selborne, showcasing their prowess in the pool. Despite a hiatus in fixtures since the St Andrew’s College Shield, the team commenced the tournament impressively. The opening match against St Alban’s was a tightly contested affair, resulting in a hard-fought 6-5 victory. On day two, the team faced a resilient Grey Bloemfontein but clinched a 7-4 triumph, setting a positive tone for the competition. In the final pool fixture against Stirling, some lapses led to conceding easy goals, but the team secured a 13-4 win.
The quarterfinal proved to be a stern test against Reddam Constantia, where both teams displayed exceptional skills. In a closely fought battle, Reddam emerged victorious with an 8-7 score, relegating our team to the 5th-8th position bracket. Facing a formidable St David’s team, the physical challenge posed difficulties, resulting in a 9-6 loss.
The tournament’s showdown against local rivals, Grey High, was a gripping contest. Despite a slow start that left the team trailing 6-2, a late surge showcased excellent water polo skills. Unfortunately, the effort fell short, resulting in a narrow 7-6 loss and an overall 8th position out of 16 schools. The team now looks ahead to the final tournament of the season at KES, recognizing the need for improvement.
A heartfelt thank you goes to Mr Michael Turner, who not only managed the team but also served as the official driver, ensuring proper warm-ups before each match.
