Farewell to Lesley Mhlambiso

Lesley joined the staff as the Laboratory Technician in the Physical Science and Life Science Departments in September 2017.  He has a background in Analytical Chemistry, having worked in industry at Willard Batteries, Cerebos and SAB and brought with him a wealth of experience. Lesley demands a high standard and has been meticulous in his work. We have been lucky to have his high level of skill in setting up practical investigations, preparing solutions, and maintaining the laboratories and stores and his professional approach will be sorely missed. He has used his expertise to streamline systems and processes in many ways, from routine maintenance of the bank of gas bottles to improved safety initiatives such as the emergency eye wash stations.

Lesley has been a role model to his children (he has a daughter completing her LLB and another beginning a mechatronics degree), as well as to our students. He often engages students in conversation, encouraging them and motivating them. He expects a lot of the youth and is passionate about the transformative impact of education.

Lesley has found some aspects of the job frustrating, particularly the fluctuations in workload, with some weeks being overwhelmingly busy. He has always wanted to study further, which this post has not allowed. Excitingly, the job offers that he has had will offer him this opportunity and we look forward to hearing news of his future endeavours.

On behalf of the Life Sciences and Physical Sciences departments, in particular, but also all the students and staff of St Andrew’s, we thank you for what you have contributed, and we wish you happiness and fulfilment in your future work.
