Makana Athletics Championships

MAKANA ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIP
The Makana Athletics Championships took place on Saturday 10 February 2024 at the Rhodes University Prospect Field. This event is the first of three to identify athletes as part of the Eastern Province Athletics trials.
The competition was strong from Kingswood, Graeme and Nombulelo Secondary School. It was pleasing to see the Makana region putting on a strong performance putting Eastern Province in good stead for the future.
The St Andrew’s College team performed well despite limited training time. A highlight of the day was Jean De Villiers, who went on to win his 3000m race in a personal best time of 10 minutes 17 seconds.
Continuing with the success of the day, the majority of the boys who competed recorded personal best times. Qhawe Madikizela and Avumile Bangazi came 1st and 2nd in their U17 400m heats, respectively. Zukolwakhe Mdodana and Qhawe Madikizela, again, both came 2nd in their U17 100m heats, and Julian Mapoore and Alex Hutton both came 3rd in their U19 100m heats.
We await the final results to see if our student-athletes qualify for the Sarah Baartman Championship to be held at the Westbourne Oval in Gqeberha on the 21 February 2024.
Well done to all of you who participated.
– Mr Michael Turner
