The sun beat down relentlessly as the much-anticipated Settlers Cup unfolded today. St Andrew’s hosted the event and, despite the sweltering heat, managed to put on some of the best tennis we have seen in a while!
After a December holiday, one might have expected a slow start from the players, however, the courts buzzed with energy. It kicked off with St Andrew’s College facing Kingswood College and the home team wasted no time asserting their dominance. St Andrew’s College showcased a level of experience that outplayed their younger counterparts from Kingswood.
Union High from Graaff-Reinet brought a challenging twist, making life a little difficult for some SAC players. Union managed to sneak a win in one of the singles matches.
As the mercury continued to rise, so did the intensity of the competition with SAC saving the toughest challenge for last. Graeme College arrived with determination, making SAC work for every point. The scores were deceptive, failing to fully capture the closeness of some of the matches. In the end, SAC walked away with a comfortable win of 10 matches to 2.
Congratulations to Cameron Bennett, Qhawe Mbetshu, Lou Coetzee, Karabo van Heerden, Matthew Ladds, Rhys Wiblin, Alastair de Kock and Scott Miles on a well-deserved victory!
