The South African Mathematics Team Competition, sponsored by the Actuarial Society of South Africa, has been an annual event since 1990. The competition comprises two separate papers. The first is answered separately by each team member, with everyone’s individual score contributing to the final team mark. The second paper is answered as a team and requires strategic collaboration, drawing on the combined strengths of the team members. Each team comprises 10 pupils drawn from the surrounding area. St Andrew’s College teamed up with DSG and Kingswood to enter a Junior as well as a Senior team this year. Despite some incredibly tough questions, both teams achieved commendable rankings – the Juniors were placed 12th out of 39 teams nationally, while the Senior team was placed 9th out of 34 teams.
