Eastern Cape Schools Debating Provincials

This past weekend, St Andrew’s College hosted the annual Eastern Cape Schools Debating Provincial Trials with a remarkable turnout of 31 schools. Delegates engaged in five debating rounds, including both prepared and impromptu topics that covered a diverse array of subjects.

The debates were intellectually stimulating, touching on thought-provoking motions such as “Opposing the glorification of grit in narratives of success” and “Advocating for a neutral aggregate currency over the US Dollar as the global reserve currency.” “Supporting political consumerism” and “African states aiding local rebel groups” were some other engaging motions that kept the discourse lively.

During the semifinals and finals, participants passionately discussed the redeemability of all people and the use of lustration in newly-formed democracies, respectively.

Celebrating achievements, the Rini Debating League excelled in both junior and senior divisions, with numerous speakers securing spots on the EC Junior and Senior Teams. Noteworthy is the success of the Nombulelo High School Academy team on the EC Junior Team, while Alex Hutton of St Andrew’s College earned a place on the EC Senior Team, setting the stage for the upcoming national competition this December. Congratulations also go to the rest of the St Andrew’s team who placed 12th, and a special well done to Aiden Wood, Robert Shaw, and Siviwe Quma.

Extending a hand of collaboration and growth, we welcomed Nyanga High School into our midst, fostering a partnership aimed at nurturing the art of debating in both institutions. Little did they anticipate that their observation would transform into enthusiastic participation, and we applaud them for embracing the challenge of being part of this year’s provincial tournament as our swing team.

Gratitude goes to all participating schools and leagues for making this provincial competition outstanding. Together, we elevated discourse and intellectual vitality.
