Founder’s Day and Quinque 2023

On Sunday 30 July we celebrated Founder’s Day at College and, as is traditional, we also awarded the Five Term Tie to the Grade 9s and all the boys in other grades who have been at College for five terms.

College is rich in traditions, and this is one of the more unusual rituals because the exact provenance of the Five Term Tie is unknown, as is the reasoning behind awarding it after five terms. However, we pause in our Founder’s Day Chapel Service and acknowledge these young Andreans who are one third of the way through their College careers.

The Grade 9s, to their great excitement, are also afforded the privilege of being allowed to walk on the lawn around the Old School Bell outside the Centenary Hall and Mr Hamilton encouraged the boys with the following words: As you walk across that lawn next to the Old School Bell, reflect on your time at College and what you have accomplished during your first five terms. One of the best things about St Andrew’s is that it allows you to become who you want to be. It brings out your passions and it gives you the chance to try anything that you think you might be good at. You have two thirds of your time left here at College so be sure to continue that passion as you undertake your own personal journey into young manhood. May you be continually challenged and supported by staff and encouraged by friends and senior boys.
