DB Wylde Indaba – Andrew de Blocq

Mr Andrew de Blocq (Armstrong 2009) was the DB Wylde Leadership Indaba guest last Thursday evening at the Highlander. He was interviewed by Grade 11 pupils, Tom Clucas and Lathitha Mayaba, in front of an engaged audience. We were honoured to have Mr and Mrs Wylde with us for the evening.

Andrew was awarded Bagpipe Honours while at school and so it was fitting to also have Mr Chris Terry in the audience, to whom Andrew owes his exceptional achievements as a piper.

Andrew’s message to the pupils was clear - make use of your countless opportunities at College and DSG to become a multifaceted human, volunteer for new experiences, and value the importance of communicating well, with care and thought.

As an ornithologist working at BirdLife South Africa, Andrew is highly conscious of the important role that human beings play in the survival and conservation of many species on Earth. His work is tightly aligned with education and developing skills, knowledge and employment in the avi-tourism sector through training of birding guides, among many other things.

LECTURE

Classes in all grades at St Andrew's College and DSG were treated to a lecture by Andrew de Blocq on birds. He traced the evolution of this animal and talked about some of the glamorous species and the record-breaking superstar birds. This was a most informative and entertainingly presented talk which no doubt piqued the interest of aspiring birders at our schools. We look forward to the exciting project of mapping all the birds with which we are privileged to share our beautiful campus, and then creating awareness and educating the boys about them.
