Pipe Band: De La Salle Highland Gathering

The Pipe Band travelled to Johannesburg over the weekend to compete in the De La Salle highland gathering. The weekend was busy and was the first time College had sent a senior and junior band.

The Saturday hosted the band competition, where both bands competed in the Novice juvenile and Grade 4 sections. The Senior band competed in the March selection and MSR, while the junior band only competed in the March selection.

The senior band performed well and put on a solid performance placing 5th in the novice march and 4th overall in grade 4.

The Junior band, having worked hard for three weeks leading up to the competition, put on a strong performance. This was the junior band members’ first participation in a competition. The boys dealt with the pressure very well and came out of the competition having learnt a lot and with renewed energy.

The rest of the Saturday, the College Band watched the best senior bands in the country compete and finished the day marching in the massed bands.

The Sunday saw the Solo competition, with 15 band members competing across different divisions. The boy’s dealt with the pressure of competing solo well, put on solid performances and continued to learn valuable lessons.

Some notable performances were.

Oliver Lamb placed 4th in the Chanter competition.

Mathew Theron placed 5th in the Chanter.

Kyle Schwechheimer placed 4th in the Novice B Snare Drum March.

Arav Sewsunker, Olona Kamba and Jiyana Ncapai placed 4th, 5th and 6th respectively, in the novice march Tenor drumming.

Overall, the weekend was a great success for the band and has laid a solid foundation for the band to continue to build.
