G9 Design

During the second half of Term 1, the Grade 9 Design pupils had to design a modular student flat / pod. They had to consider how the unit will be replicated and then combined to form a residential building with living pods and communal spaces. Their final 3D model had to showcase the detailed plan layout and design of the modular flat / pod (not bigger than 20cm x 20cm x 20cm) and had to be built to scale.
G10 Design: Biophilic design is a concept used within the building industry to increase occupant connectivity to the natural environment through the use of direct nature, indirect nature, and space and place conditions. Used at both the building and city-scale, it is argued that this idea has health, environmental, and economic benefits for building occupants and urban environments, with little drawbacks. Although its name was coined in recent history, indicators of biophilic design have been seen in architecture from as far back as the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. The City of Cape Town CBD is in the process of getting the first Biophilic building in Africa, named, ‘The Fynbos’.

These are the Grade 10 Design student’s interpretations of Biophilic architectural design. Through primary research (their own photographs), they had to ideate, develop and choose a final biophilic/biomimic design to produce an architectural piece in a block model.
G12:

As part of their practical matric portfolio, the G12 Design pupils had to respond to the theme; Dissonance, Direction, Design. Their design process includes a design portfolio of research, ideation, development, production and the marketing and branding of their design concept. Resulting in a scale model or prototype of their design and a concept board, promoting their design to a potential investor / client.
