SA Senior Championships Regatta and Junior Provincial Rowing Camp

Over the last two weeks of the holidays, Max Estcourt, Joe Kroon and Connor Moorcroft were selected as part of the Eastern Cape squad to compete at the South African Senior Rowing Championships as well as joining the annual Junior Provincial rowing camp in the run-up to the regatta. The three boys, along with one rower each from Grey High School and Selborne College, travelled to Tzaneen in Limpopo to join together with the top junior rowers from all over the country for a nine-day training camp. The camp consisted of two training sessions each day, either on the ergo, in the gym, or on the pristine waters of the Tzaneen Dam which offers endless water to row on and consistently warm, windless days. Max, Joe and Connor worked exceptionally hard to develop themselves and were given fantastic opportunities to learn, both from their peers on and off the water, as well as from presentations and seminars given by the top coaches from Gauteng and Western Cape.

Following the camp, the squad relocated to Roodeplaat Dam in Pretoria and competed at the South African Senior Rowing Championships on 29 and 30 April.

Competing both at Under 18 as well as Senior ‘A’ level, the boys acquitted themselves very well, Joe Kroon and Connor Moorcroft took 1st place in the Under-18 Pairs event and were able to fend off several top university crews to make it into the final of the Senior A pairs, finishing in 8th place. Max Estcourt took 3rd place in the Under-18 sculls event. The five Eastern Cape rowers also combined with three Gauteng squad members to form a composite eight for the Men’s A event, finishing in 5th place overall.

St Andrew’s College also wishes to thank Buffalo Toyota for the loan of a towing vehicle for the tour, this enabled the Eastern Cape rowers to travel and compete with their own boats and equipment at the camp and Championships regatta.

Well done to all the boys for your sacrifice and commitment to take this opportunity over the holidays!
