USA Rugby Tour – match 1 vs Fighting QuahoggsApr 14, 2023
St Andrew’s College had the privilege of hosting this year’s U16 independent schools Hockey Festival hosting talented teams from all over the country. Teams taking part included: St Andrew's College, Pearson High School, St Charles College, Helpmekaar College, Reddam House, St Andrew’s School, Bishops Diocesan College, Kingswood College and Michaelhouse.
The teams were well organized and well coached, and we look forward to seeing their hockey programmes progress in the years to come.
St Andrew’s College had a very successful tournament winning 4 out of 5 of their fixtures. More importantly, was the progress the players made individually and as a team. Their tournament highlight was their last game of the tournament where they displayed good hockey despite tired legs to secure a 5 - 2 victory over Bishops, a team that had not lost a game until this fixture.
The team had many standouts, and every player had their part to play and did so with immense effort. This was much appreciated by the coaches. Players to mention include Matthew Ladds who led from the back with super ball speed, positioning, and discipline. This set the tone and allowed Daniel Meihuizen and Samuel Sheckter to dominate the midfield. Not only was their ball distribution superb but also their abilities to eliminate players, carry the ball and then pick the right pass. They also contributed with their share of goals making it an excellent all-round midfield performance. The forward line was led by example through the efforts and work ethic of Jean de Villiers. His work rate inspired the team and his partners upfront managed to support him in his efforts.
Thanks to everyone involved for making the experience possible.
