Football – Saints Sports Festival

The St Andrew’s 1st Football Team participated in the St Stithians Easter Festival. The team played in five tough fixtures and learned many lessons in a short space of time. The team started their first fixture versus Thandulwazi Academy successfully. College raced to a lightning 3-0 lead in the first half. Thandulwazi Academy fought back brilliantly and scored 2 quick goals and was rewarded a penalty in the last play of the match. A thrilling match ended 3-3. A solid start to the team’s journey. The following two matches versus St Peter’s College and Jeppe Boys’ High School led to an interesting day off football for St Andrew’s College. The 1st team had a slow start to the first math and found themselves 0-3 down by half-time versus St Petere’s College. The team played exceptional football in the second half, but the St Peter’s defensive held firm and made it difficult for the College strikers to find the back of the net. The match ended 0-3 to St Peter’s College. Despite the result and difficult start to the day, the College team showed phenomenal character versus an extremely talented Jeppe team. College raced to a 2-0 lead; the boys played their hearts out. Jeppe Boys’ created two opportunities and scored two goals to level the scores by full-time. A spectacular match a football for any neutral. In the final day, the St Andrew’s team had two much anticipated matches versus St Benedict’s College and the hosts, St Stithians College. During the first match of the day the boys in blue dominated the St Benedict’s College team in both possession and territory. Despite creating numerous opportunities in the 18-yard area, the 1st Team couldn’t score and seal the win. The College boys had to settle for a 1-1 draw. After scoring first, and trailing 2-1 to St Stithians College in what was probably the best half of football during the festival, the St Andrew’s College team battled to bounce back and lost 1-5 due to a disappointing 2nd half performance. Many lessons were learned, and the team will certainly benefit from these lessons during the year. Nonetheless, congratulations to the St Stitians 1st Football Team on a phenomenal 2nd half performance.
