Victoria Park Football Tournament

The St Andrew’s College U16A and 1st Team travelled to Gqeberha for the much-anticipated Victoria Park Football Tournament .

The U16A team enjoyed a good tournament and can be proud of their efforts. They qualified for the Plate Cup Semi-Finals after drawing their group matches. Their results were as follows:
St Andrew’s 0 – 0 Urban Academy
St Andrew’s 1 – 1 Dale College
Plate Semi-Finals
St Andrew’s 1 – 2 Milnerton High School

The 1st XI started their campaign off against Woodridge College in a highly entertaining match. College dominated the match in both territory and possession but failed to capitalise on their multiple opportunities. The match ended in a 0 – 0 draw. This result meant that College had to win their remaining group matches in order to qualify for the Quarter-Finals.

The boys had a slow start to their second fixture versus Linkside High School and trailed 0-1 at half-time. The team came out firing in the second half and scored two quick goals to lead 2-1.

The final match of the group stages was against Sanctor High School — it was an intense affair. Sanctor started the match perfectly and scored in the first 10 minutes of the match. College absorbed wave after wave of attack, and finally gained some possession towards the end of the first half. The team took this momentum into the second half and levelled scores. The 1st XI took full control of the match creating numerous scoring opportunities. A well-executed corner in the dying minutes of the match gave College a 2 – 1 lead and meant that the team topped their group and qualified for the Cup knock-out stages. The St Andrew’s side faced the talented Selborne College team in the Quarter-Finals. The match started like a house on fire. College dominated territory and scored early to give the side a 1-0 lead. However, Selborne College was relentless in their comeback and scored in the dying seconds of the first half. College refocused at the break and both teams played some phenomenal football, end to end, and inch for inch, the boys gave it their absolute all. The second half ended goalless, and the teams went straight to penalties.

Selborne’s keeper made some brilliant blocks and took his team through to the semi-finals. Selborne College went on to the Cup Finals and lost to Urban Academy on penalties.

The St Andrew’s College 1st XI can be extremely proud of their performances, the team represented the school with pride and unmatched commitment.
