79 St Andrew’s College boys recently took part in Round 1 of the South African Mathematics Olympiad, with over three-quarters of them making it through to the second round. Particular congratulations go to Rafael Carrara, Mitchell Hartney and Felix Jackson who all scored 90% in the Grade 8 paper, and Scott Gordon who scored 85% in the Grade 9 paper. In the Senior paper, Gregory Miller and Matthew Poole both scored 80%, while Alastair De Kock scored a superlative 100%. To do this while still in Grade 10 is a remarkable achievement.
The Maths Olympiad results also played an important role in the Senior Interhouse Maths Competition. After combining the Relay and Olympiad components the final standings are: 6th place Armstrong; 5th Merriman; 4th Graham; 3rd Upper; 2nd Mullins; and 1st place, finishing with a commanding lead, Espin. Congratulations to everyone who took part, and to Espin for taking the title of Senior Interhouse Maths Champions of 2023.
