Rugby: St Andrew’s vs Nico Malan

Over the last couple of weekends, the rugby club has travelled to East London and Humansdorp in preparation for the season. We were hosted by Stirling High School and Nico Malan respectively. As expected, these were tough games in challenging conditions. There have been some harsh lessons for the teams, hopefully, this will help all cope with a very demanding season.

The junior teams battled well throughout and there is lots to get excited about. The U16s has a mixed set of results with a comfortable win in East London and a tough loss against Nico Malan. The senior teams have all been competitive in very close games. The 1st XV had a good win away against Stirling 24 – 3. This weekend against Nico Malan the 1sts could not manage to convert their opportunities and lost with the final move of the game 17 – 18.

St Andrew’s 1sts vs Nico Malan
The St Andrew’s College 1st XV rugby side travelled to Humansdorp on Saturday to play what is always a tough fixture against a motivated and physical Nico Malan team. College had the wind at their backs in the first half but did not use this advantage as well as they might have, trying to play too much rugby in their own territory. Jacques Cloete and Joe Bennie scored the two College tries from the 1st half, one of which was converted by Daniel Hickey. Nico Malan scored a try of their own against the run of play, with College going into the break only 12-5 up, which meant the second half was always going to be difficult, playing into the wind.
An early penalty to Nico Malan in the second half narrowed the deficit and with their Craven Week flyhalf using the wind effectively, College was forced to play lots of rugby in their own half. A well-worked try to Jason Dovey gave College some breathing space, but soon after the kick-off the deficit was reduced again, to 17-13, with ten minutes of the game remaining. College defended their line manfully for long passages of play, but in the final movement of the game, Nico Malan scored to take the win 18-17.
