St Andrew’s College Shield 2023 Water Polo Tournament

What an incredible weekend for Water Polo, Makhanda and St Andrew’s College. Everyone put on great show. The Tournament started on Thursday 26 January 2023, with the top schools from around the country competing for The St Andrew’s Shield.

The 1st Team opened the tournament with a good win over St Johns 8 – 7. They then played Michaelhouse and with a much tighter defense on our side, we managed a solid 11 – 3 victory. Our final game of the day was against Clifton, unfortunately we did not work hard enough on our defense and allowed Clifton to score several easy goals and Clifton eventually won 9 – 5.

Friday brought around a different approach, The 1st team made hard work of their game against Bishops in the 1st Three quarters, but a solid 4th quarter performance showed what we were capable of, and they won the game 14 – 7. The final game of the day was against the unbeaten Paul Roos team. We unfortunately did not stick to our structures and allowed the Paul Roos defensive pattern to dominate proceedings.  They eventually won the game 10-2.

After working out the different permutations, we finished Third. in our Pool and came up against St Stithians in the quarter final who finished Second in their Pool. The 1st team started slowly but finished strong and progressed to the Semi Final with a 9 – 6 win over Saints.

We came up against Paul Roos again in the Semi-Final. The team showed a huge improvement and the defense was tight. The small errors in the Fourth quarter allowed Paul Roos to take a two-goal lead and we unfortunately lost 6 – 4.

The final day was a big one for us. We met Clifton in. the Third and Forth Playoff. The team started strong and this was the best defensive effort of the tournament. We had a 6 – 0 lead going into the fourth quarter and closed the game out and eventually won 7 – 3 to claim the Bronze Medal. Well done to the 1st team on a great tournament.

Paul Roos beat Rondebosch 5 – 3 in the final.

A big thank you must go out to everyone involved. To Shannon and the catering team, the food was exceptional all weekend. To Jabu and the maintenance for making sure all ran smoothly, to the Gert and the IT department for the live Streaming and keeping the scoreboard on during load shedding. To Roger and the ground staff for the set up and Jenny and her crew for making then grounds across the school look exceptional and to Tom Clucas and his table officials who worked tirelessly. To anyone that I missed, thank you for making the weekend a HUGE success and finally to the Boys in Blue, The support was incredible, you can all be proud of how you represented St Andrew’s College.

Here’s to a successful year for all of you in 2023.
