Over the weekend of 21 – 22 January, the St Andrew’s College 2nd water polo team participated in the annual Keet & Breetzke tournament in East London. With the boys competing for the Breetzke trophy.
Having made it out of the pool stages in first place St Andrew’s came up against the Selborne 2nd team in the semi-final. Unfortunately, we were not able to capitalise on some early opportunities and let in a few soft goals which gave Selborne a comfortable lead and had us playing catch up for the whole game. Eventually we went down 2 goals to 7. In the 3rd place play-off on Sunday morning, the St Andrew’s team were clinical on attack and dominated both halves, eventually winning 6-4 to the hosts, Merrifield. Dominic Cloete and Connor Brand were the standout players on attack, while Drew Stockill and Toby Minns were stellar on defense.
It was great to see how the boys were able to dust off the cobwebs from the holiday and start playing the more dynamic polo that is characteristic of the team by the end of the tournament. Merrifield really went out of their way to organise a high-quality event for spectators and competitors alike and we look forward to returning next year and challenging for the top spot.
