Makana Community Orchestra Inaugural Concert

In mid-November members of the Makana community filled the Cathedral of St Michael and St George to the brim for the inaugural performance of the newly formed Makana Community Orchestra (MCO).

The programme consisted of an array of music to satisfy the taste of the diverse audience, from film music and an astounding clarinet ensemble to Joseph Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto and “Kindersinfonie”.

Several young St Andrew’s College musicians were selected to be part of the orchestra: Sauvan Sewsunker (violin), Louis Nchindo (violin), Jonathan Pretorius (cello), Tristan Ssekimpi (clarinet) James Barrow (percussion), and Kumkani Kabane (euphonium soloist). Five St Andrew’s staff members, not all of them music teachers, are also members of the MCO and were part of this historic event. Mr Johan Pretorius of St Andrew’s College was appointed Artistic Director and Conductor of the orchestra, which is an initiative by the Rhodes University Department of Music and Musicology and the brainchild of Head of the department, Dr Boudina McConnachie.

Advanced music pupils from Makhanda schools and further afield, students from Rhodes University as well as professional and amateur musicians from Makhanda and the ACCESS Music Program all form part of this initiative. We are extremely proud of our St Andrew’s College musicians for sharing their talent and enriching the wider community through music.
