The St Andrew’s College and DSG Chamber Choir participated in the Sing in Harmonie Southern Region Finals in September 2022, finishing as runner-up champions and bringing with them the Award for the Best non-Afrikaans work with their rendition of Meriam Makeba’s song – To those we love (Nongqongqo).

Nongqongqo, arranged by Chamber Choir conductor Mr Kepadisa with the Chamber Choir was a popular work released in 1965. It ponders the life of all those who were kept prisoner during the Apartheid era. The Chamber Choir arranged this song to be sung at the Youth Day commemoration. They added further names of other significant political prisoners in addition to those in the original and took a moment to reflect on a different type of prison, this time, affecting not only a few people but the youth population at large. Nalu’lutsha bayahlupheka (translated as “here is the struggling youth”) alludes to the prison of mental illness a lot of young people find themselves battling.

This video (https://youtu.be/yt8-HwsaI0Q) was taken at the Sing-in-Harmonie finals, with the choir receiving a standing ovation after their performance.
