St Andrew’s College and DSG Acoustic Café Performances

The St Andrew’s College and DSG Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Mr Virgil Mattrass were invited to perform at The Acoustic Café held at The Vic on Thursday 27 September.  As a community initiative, the Acoustic Café is run by volunteers providing a professional platform for established and emerging musicians along with a supportive and attentive audience. The ensemble was warmly welcomed and proceeded to take the audience on a rousing and mesmerizing journey with a well chosen set featuring mainstream and African jazz along with some excellent solo work by the students. The camaraderie and musical understanding that Mr Matrass engendered within the group was clearly on display and applauses and cheers were the order of the evening. This was a wonderful experience for the students and they did the schools proud. They also had the opportunity to polish their repertoire prior to their John Axe Arts Week performance.

Following this successful performance, Alex Murray (Grade 8 DSG) was also invited to perform at the following show. Again this provided an opportunity for a student to experience a professional stage with a supportive audience. Accompanying herself on guitar, Alex sang some of her favourite songs and had the audience enchanted with her lovely voice and assured playing on the guitar. We look forward to many more appearances by Alex on the school stages and beyond.

Thank you to Mr Dave Fuller who organised these performances by our pupils.
