Pipe Band Honours for Daniel Cotton

Daniel Cotton has been awarded Honours for Pipe Band.
Daniel began learning the bagpipe in 2016 at St Andrew’s Prep, and became a full-time member of the band when he arrived at College in 2018. Thus he is currently in his fifth year in the band. He was appointed Pipe Sergeant in 2021, and due to his level of motivation and commitment to the band, he was promoted to Pipe Major in 2022.
As a Band member, he has been fully committed to the pipe band and has led by example. Despite a few lean years of pipe band activity during the Covid pandemic, Daniel’s commitment to the band has been unwavering. As Pipe Major, he has led from the front and has set the standard for the band to follow. He has further contributed by tutoring beginners in his house. In addition to his commitment to his band duties, Daniel has played at several ceremonial events such as reunion Loving Cup ceremonies.
As a piper Daniel has clearly spent a great deal of time perfecting his playing, in particular over the last two years, where he has had major success in solo competitions.
The Covid pandemic greatly reduced opportunities for competition. For most of 2020 and 2021, the only solo competitions were done online, which is at best a somewhat watered-down experience. Nevertheless, Daniel has been successful when he has had the opportunity to compete.
In March 2022, Daniel competed in Junior Hundred Guineas, the country’s national junior piping championship, where he was placed second in the Piobaireachd, second in the March, and third in the Strathspey and Reel, which placed him second overall in the Championship.
Following this success, he was placed second in the Silver Medal Piobaireachd (an open event), and second in the U21 March, Strathspey and Reel at the South Coast Highland Gathering in April. At the De la Salle Highland Gathering in June he was placed first in the Junior Piobaireachd, and fourth in the junior March, Strathspey and Reel.
These results indicate that Daniel is one of the best junior pipers in the country.
His commitment to the band and to St Andrew’s College, both as piper and as Pipe Major, as well as the quality of his piping, truly make Daniel a worthy candidate for a Pipe Band Honours Award.
