On the 7 June the senior Afrikaans FAL and Home Language Afrikaans pupils of St Andrew’s and DSG battled it out for the prestigious title of being the Bekgeveg (public speaking) champion of their subject. The speakers brought their “A” game and the judges admitted that they had a tough time deciding on the ultimate winners. The topics ranged from the Afrikaans versions of “Cancel culture is a new form of bullying”, “Actions speak louder than words”, “University is not the only option after school” to “There are no winners in a war”. The standard was exceptionally high. The College winners were as follows:
Afrikaans Home Language: Julius Rocher
Afrikaans First Additional Language: Aiden Wood.
Thanks are due to the participants, the IT department, the Highlander staff, the Afrikaans department and the judges, Ms. Bronwyn Herring and Ms. Marika du Toit.
