Scott Moorcroft and Matthew Powell competed at the SA Senior Rowing Championships held at Roodeplaat Dam near Pretoria last weekend. Competing in both Men’s A and B pairs events, Scott and Matthew raced four tough two kilometre races over the day with heats in the morning and finals in the afternoon.
In the final of the Men’s A event, the St Andrew’s College rowers had the opportunity to line up alongside three crews from the current senior national team including OAs Jake Green (Merriman 2012) and Henry Torr (Merriman 2017) as well as previous Olympic medal winners; John Smith (Gold medallist at London 2012) and Shaun Keeling (Silver medallist at Rio 2016). The pace was understandably very fast but Scott and Matthew did well to keep in contact with the tail end of the race against some top varsity crews. A short time later Scott and Matthew were back on the start line for the final of the Men’s B pairs event, racing against crews from Tuks, UJ and Wits. After a tough battle against the leading Tuks crew for first place, the College rowers had to settle for a commendable second place.
