Four St Andrew’s College Grade 8 debaters (Galeboe Jujuju. Olona Kamba, Siweziwe Shongwe and Seth Mushambavanhu) took to the podium this weekend at the Hudson Park High School Junior Debating Festival. This is an annual event that first started in 2018 but has not taken place in the past two years due to the pandemic. It was indeed an experience for our boys who were overwhelmed by the twenty-one schools present at the event with over 46 teams participating in back-to-back debates. Although all motions for the day were prepped, it was challenging for the boys to prepare and structure arguments for both proposition and opposition as they would only find out their side’s minutes at the beginning of each debate.
St Andrew’s found themselves opposing in all three rounds of the competition. Merrifield College proposed a strong case for their house that would regulate factory farming of animals in the first round. The College boys came back strong against Cambridge High School with the motion:” This house would cancel all television programmes that feature child performers”, and finally, also winning their final debate of the day against Gonubie High School when they opposed the motion, “This House believed online activism is counterproductive”.
