Pupils return to College after 21-day Fish River JourneyNov 30, 2021
This year’s Inter-House Football Competition was played under a new innovative format. Each House competed with one team made up from the available Grades (8, 9 and 11) on campus. The teams were expected to always have three boys per Grade present on the field.
The boys found the new format challenging in the first round of matches but adapted well, and the matches became positively competitive from the second round onwards. After the group games, Armstrong House and Graham House topped their respective groups and went straight to the final. Both teams played outstanding football, their collaboration between the senior and junior boys were outstanding. The Grade 11 players and managers from both teams can be extremely proud of how they led their teams. They allowed their junior teammates to feel valued and included.
Armstrong started the final on fire. The seniors attacked relentlessly and constantly posed threats to the Graham defenders, while their juniors defended extremely well, putting their bodies on the line with every tackle. Armstrong played superbly and scored 3 goals to lead 3-0 at half-time. Nonetheless, Graham never gave up and scored early in the second half. The match was highly entertaining and bounced back and forth. Armstrong scored again to make it 4-2 and potentially seal the deal, but Graham came back firing in the last 15 minutes, dominating both territory and possession. The Houses each scored a goal in the last 10 minutes of the match. In the end, it was Armstrong House who was crowned champions beating Graham House 5-3.
The other results were as follows:
Upper beat Mullins 3-0 in the 3rd/4th playoff.
Espin beat Merriman 3-1 in the 5th/6th playoff.
Thank you to Oliver Jonckheer and James Stapylton-Smith, who initiated the idea and did all the initial administrative tasks. A massive thank you to Mr Wilkinson and his phenomenal staff who prepared the fields. We look forward to an incredible 2022 football season.
