1st XV Cricket vs Woodridge College

St Andrew’s College won the toss and elected to bat first in their annual 50 over fixture vs Woodridge College. It was a new look College 1st XI on Lower field, and they were soon under pressure vs Woodridge’s provincial left arm fast bowler, Ian Baard. College were in a hurry, runs were flowing, but wickets were also falling. Ian Baard was the chief destroyer with a wonderful return of 5 wickets for 36 runs in his 10 overs. College on 82/5 and then 141/8 kept on with their brave attacking strategy which proved fruitful in the end with College posting 304/9 in their 50 overs.

Mathew Poole held the end of the innings together with a very well-played 81 not out off 89 balls. Nicholas Lane (44) and Christopher Birrell (24 not out) made gritty contributions which assured the much needed partnerships for College. Matthew Poole and Chritopher Birrell’s 85 run 10th wicket partnership must be one of the highest achieved at 1st XI level for College.

Woodridge responded well in their run chase and were well placed on 170/2, albeit a little behind the rate required. College stood firm restricting Woodridge to 222/7 in their 50 overs. Joshua Botha top scored for Woodridge with a superb 85 and was well supported up front with James Beckley’s well compiled 47. Oliver Snart was the pick of the College bowlers, his leg spin again proving to be an effective option for College. His 4/50 was in partnership with Chris Birrell’s neat 2/20.

Well done to both teams for an entertaining 50 over match on a quality lower pitch.
