On 9 June 2021, the Grade 7 pupils from Oatlands Preparatory school came to St Andrew’s College for an afternoon of Chemistry.
The afternoon was a resounding success and the pupils had a fun and educational session. The children were introduced to Chemistry, where they learnt about elements, the Periodic Table and basic reactions such as the reaction of magnesium and hydrochloric acid, producing hydrogen gas which pops when lit with a splint. Also the reaction of potassium with water which produced a bright flame. This was then followed by their own practical experiment of making ice-cream from scratch in 15 minutes. This Involved reducing the freezing point of cream and milk by using salt.
A huge thank you to Mrs Goodier, Mrs Jamieson and the Project Rise logistics team members, John Marshall, Ayomideji Israel-Akinbo and Ishan Panchal for the fun educational session.
