Bagpipes Championships

While the current pandemic has meant that pipe band competitions have been cancelled for the foreseeable future, solo competitions have been able to continue in the form of online competitions, where competitors submit video recording of their selected tunes.

The first competition of 2021 was the Sandy Mallen Memorial competition, incorporating the Pipe Major A Watters Jig Challenge, and consisted of the March, the Strathspey & Reel and Piobaireachd.

Results were as follows –

Chris Pretorius:
4th in the Junior Piobaireachd
5th overall in the Sandy Mallen Memorial Junior competition.

Arran Hepburn:
8th in the open Pipe Major A Watters Jig challenge (3rd placed junior); 2nd in the Junior Piobaireachd; 3rd in the Junior March and
Strathspey & Reel;
3rd overall in the Sandy Mallen Memorial Junior competition.

This was a wonderful experience with some brilliant results for the pipers, where they learnt a lot about the level of practice that is required leading up to a competition.

The Annual South African Junior Solo bagpipe championships, known as the Junior 100 Guineas, was held at the end of last term with College pipers taking part. This year the competition was held online with competitors having to make and submit video recordings for judging with the results being released over the
holidays. The competition comprised of three sections, The Junior March, Junior Strathspey and Reel, and Junior Piobaireachd.
