Over the December holidays, Matthew Grunewald was re-awarded his South African Colours and was included in the South African Open Men’s Rock-Climbing Team at the African Continental Championships in Cape Town. The event was the Olympic qualifier for athletes on the African Continent.
Only 14 athletes progressed to the semifinals and Matthew did superbly in all his events. He ended 8th for speed in a time of 9.59seconds, 8th for bouldering and 7th for lead. Those results progressed him into the finals on the Sunday. Despite being the youngest competitor in the final he ended up in 8th place on the African Continent. As a school boy, Matthew continues to make his mark in SA Senior Climbing and we look forward to seeing him continue to excel in this sport.
