The 2019/2020 1st Team travelled to Johannesburg to compete in the annual St Stithians u18 tournament. There are two new boys in the team, Michael Owen-Jones and Nic Jones, who are both in Grade 9. The Captain and Vice-Captain for the 2019/2020 Season are Matthew Hillary and Josh Cowen respectively.
The team didn’t start off the way we wanted to and went down 10 – 9 to St David’s on day one. However, we rebounded and played some really good water polo on day 2, beating Michaelhouse 10 – 3 and Jeppe 6 -2. In the final game of the day, St Andrew’s College came up against a more favoured Clifton team in a must win game. We played our best water polo of the tournament in this game and won 6-2, which put us at the top of our pool.
The team came up against Bishops in the quarter finals. We didn’t start the way we wanted and made some basic defensive errors and couldn’t get back into the game which we lost 7 – 4.
In the playoff games, we came up against the home side, St Stithians College, and started well by taking a 3-1 lead, but couldn’t seal the game. Unfortunately, with a little bit of ill-discipline and frustration, we lost the game 4-3.
The final game of the tournament was against a young St John’s team against who we had two poor quarters, in what was otherwise an entertaining game with 22 goals scored. We ended up on the losing end going down 12-10 and finished in 8th place.
A big congratulations to Ben Jevon for making the St Stithians ALL star team.
The team will have to be more consistent going forward if we are to compete for medals in the tournaments next year.
