TIMOTHY WILLIAM SIMPSON

HONOURS IN MUSIC

Timothy has made an extraordinary contribution to the musical life of College since his arrival in 2015. He has performed regularly at Senior Open Concerts, the College and DSG Youth Music Festivals, House Music Competitions and assemblies. This year he was also selected to perform at the Gala Evening of the Youth Music Festival.

Timothy has been a faithful and valuable member of the Wind Orchestra and the College Chapel Choir since 2015. He was chosen as one of the soloists when the Chapel Choir travelled to Russia in 2016 for the World Choir Games. Timothy was only in Grade 9 when he was selected for the prestigious Chamber Choir. To be part of three major ensembles which run right through the year is no mean feat. This year he was chosen as Head of Chamber Choir as well as Head of the Wind Orchestra.

It is most unusual for any school pupil to have done Trinity Grade 8 examinations in two instruments. Timothy passed his Grade 8 Flute in 2018 with Merit and his Grade 8 Voice in May 2019 with Distinction. This is remarkable. He achieved 91% for his final IEB Music Practical examination and followed this up with a well-attended and warmly received Lunchtime Solo Recital during John Axe Arts Week.

Timothy’s skill and musicality are on par with the best flautists of his age in South Africa. He has always demonstrated a natural sense of phrasing, a warmth of tone, and a refined vibrato. He is a remarkable young musician and he richly deserves the award of MUSIC HONOURS.
