The Eastern Cape Provincial Tournament was hosted at Kingswood College between the 19th and 21st of July this year. Leagues from all over the province were invited to send their best debaters to battle it out for the purposes of selecting a provincial squad which will take part in the National Tournament in December.
Philip Beynon arguing his case against Clarendon in the final of the Eastern Cape Provincial Tournament.
Philip Beynon, Michael Velloza, James Stadler, Daniel Bradfield and Rowan Rosenberg were selected to participate in the senior division, and Lulo Mfaba in the junior division, based on their performances and ranking at the completion of the Rhini Debating League Championships. The Grahamstown debaters were placed in composite teams across the five preliminary rounds as well as the quarter and semi-final rounds which saw Philip Beynon’s team cruise through to the senior final against a very well-oiled Clarendon team who finally took the crown of Provincial Champions.
Beynon, Velloza, Stadler and Bradfield were all selected for the provincial squad. It is the first time we have had such a wealth of representation in the Eastern Cape setup in quite a few years and mention must be made of their coach and incumbent Eastern Cape Schools Debating President, Ms Emma Jane Spencer who has worked with them tirelessly over the last three years.
Well done to all the boys who participated.
