Three of our College swimmers and our professional swimming coach, Mrs Price, travelled to Durban to compete in the SA National Junior Age Group gala which was held between Wednesday the 20th and Sunday the 24th of March.
Oliva Lange swam in several events and made the finals for the 50, 100 and 200 m breaststroke setting new School Records for all three of these events, and the 200 m Individual Medley. He finished the 200 breast in bronze position with a time that just missed qualification for Senior Nationals and the EP record.
Martin Wolmarans had a stroke of bad luck at this gala but still swam outstandingly well making the finals in the 50 and 100 m freestyle and the 50 m butterfly. He set a new School Record in the 100 free and finished eighth in the 50 fly. He came fourth in the final for the 50 free, which was a little disappointing given that he was ranked in first-place going into the event. It is interesting to note that the winner of this event swam a time slower that Martin’s recent EP record which still ranks him first in South Africa for his age group.
Joss Hempel made the finals for the 50, 100 and 200 m freestyle and the 50 and 100 m butterfly and managed to set new School Records for all of these events in addition to the 200 m Individual Medley and 400 m freestyle.
These placings rank Joss, Oliva and Martin in the top of their respective age groups in South Africa. Well done to these swimmers on an excellent set of results!
