The Connection between Music and Maths

The relationship between Maths and Music is a discussion that has entertained academics for decades. Despite the obvious connections between Pythagoras and the western tuning system or the Fibonacci sequence and the patterns of the piano keyboard, the Music School auditorium witnessed even further proof last Sunday evening when Dr Duncan Samson (Director of Maths) took to the stage with his Violin. He was very ably accompanied by Ms Liz Campbell (part-time music teacher) on the Piano. Together, they presented a delightful and eclectic mix of pieces that generally come under the title of “Parlour Music”. Some of the composers were well-known (Handel, John Ireland and Hubert Parry) but others were less so. What joined them all together was the informal and accessible nature of the music which was further facilitated by the relaxed virtuosity of the performers.
