Music concert season off to a fantastic start

The first offering of the concert season took place recently with the Valentine’s Day Senior Open Concert. All music lovers were in attendance and there was standing room only outside a packed auditorium on a hot evening. The String Orchestra began with a scintillating performance of Electric Sinfonia by Lauren Bernofsky. Interestingly, this superb and accessible work is by a leading female composer from the USA and serves as inspiration to the many composition students here at the DRW.

David Ball, the newest Music Scholar at St Andrew’s College, stole the show slightly by performing I’m beginning to see the Light on his Violin and then surprising everybody by bursting into song in the middle!

Other music scholars that are also violinists, Yolisa Ngcola and Asive Ngcebetsha blew everybody away with the sublime beauty of their playing. Other highlights included Yoliswa Mdlankomo and Cally Still’s duet All I Want by Kodaline, as well as numerous love songs sung by various soloists as well as a few piano duets on the theme of love.

A nice touch in the penultimate performance was newboy Josh Furtner delivering his debut Trumpet performance accompanied by his Matric Mentor, John Atkinson, on the drums. A beautiful concert was brought to a stylish end by the Chamber Choir performing Fix You by Coldplay.

There were two lucky winners of the yummy hampers on offer but everybody left the gig well satisfied. Many thanks to all those that supported this event.
