Grade 8 Orientation

Starting at College as a “Newboy” is exciting but it can also be rather overwhelming.  This year we decided to spend an extra day and a half on orientation and delay the commencement of lessons until Monday for the Grade 8’s.  The orientation programme goes beyond the basics of getting one’s iPad registered and learning how to read the timetable and includes sessions titled:

  • SAC tradition and culture (Mr Marx)
  • The power of words: be careful how you use them (Mr Renard)
  • Academics (Mr Smith)
  • Our friendly neighbours (Mr & Mrs Redfern)
  • Community engagement (Ms Pretorius)

The boys also spend time in the chapel learning the school hymn and prayer and Father David talks to the boys about Christian ethos, values and foundations.  Lastly, there are sessions with the housemaster and matron where they discuss with the boys what they expect from them.

Providing the boys with more of the bigger picture context should ensure that they are more settled and ready to get stuck in when their academics start.
