Model United Nations Debating

Model United Nations debating opportunities are few and far between in South Africa which means that when St Andrew’s College attends international competitions, it’s usually the participants’ first and last experience with this exciting form of debating.

It is for that reason that we took seven Grade 8 and 9 boys to the Johannesburg International School’s MUN for four days at the end of last week.

The experience that Michael Velloza, Jonathan Shema, Matthew Thompson, Daniel Bradfield, Matthew Grunewald, Africa Matshingana and Rowan Rosenberg was invaluable: they learned the complicated processes and terminology used and they gained in confidence, debating against, and collaborating with, boys and girls three and four years older than them.

Congratulations must go to Matthew Thompson who was awarded the “Best Novice Delegate” in the ‘General Assembly 3’ committee – a wonderful achievement.
