Jean de Villiers visits College

This week we were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to listen to a presentation from ex Springbok Captain Jean De Villiers, and to have lunch with him.

It was captivating listening to his stories and learning about the life lessons that playing rugby have taught him.  He spoke about the adversity that he experienced during his career due to the injury setbacks he suffered, and how each of us will face different struggles in our quest to reach our dreams and goals.

During his difficult times he fell back on his foundation of FFF (faith, family and friends). One piece of advice he gave to us was to surround ourselves with supportive people during our tough times. People who will have a positive influence on us and who will have our best interests at heart on our road to success.

The main lesson he taught us was that “good people make good rugby players”. By this he is saying that what you do off the field has a direct influence on what you do on the field. He encouraged us to be the change that we want to see in the world.

For Jean de Villiers success is not about winning trophies or medals but rather about rising up when the odds are stacked against you (beating Samoa after losing to Japan). His mind-set is to strive for excellence even though you can’t always achieve it, you will however become a better person in doing so.

It was amazing to meet such a humble person who has accomplished so much and who is also a South African icon. We are incredibly grateful to have been able to listen and to learn from a man of his calibre.
