We are indeed fortunate to have Richard Perez visit our colleges as the 2016 Designer-in-Residence. Richard Perez is the founding director of UCT’s School of Design Thinking, he previously worked with the City of Cape Town as the Director of the World Design Capital, having previously been a partner and director of the award-winning …XYZ product, service and systems design agency. Richard holds degrees in Mechanical Engineering (UCT), Innovation Design Engineering (Royal College of Art and Imperial College of Science and Technology) and an Executive MBA (UCT). Richard’s focus is on design thinking as an enabler of innovation that can meet the needs to users in complex socio-political and economic contexts based on collaboration, human-centeredness, creative thinking and learning through doing. He delivered a public lecture on Thursday 15 September to a large group of interested people, including some of our own design students.
Mr Perez said that design thinking was now beginning to form the matrix of essential planning and innovation growth by large corporations such as banks, legal firms, accountancy firms and investment houses. Design thinking was being taught to post graduate students from many different faculties at UCT to facilitate their performances within the work place to transform businesses into more competitive and innovative organisations.
