The Pipe Band competes with top bands in KwaZulu-Natal

On Saturday the 30 April the St Andrew’s College Pipe Band participated in the annual South Coast Highland Gathering in Amanzimtoti, KwaZuluNatal. This championship event attracts the top bands in the country, the result of which is fierce competition and an extremely high playing standard.

The band spent Friday practicing at the Natal Mounted Rifles barracks in the shadow of the magnificent Moses Mabhida stadium. The band was fortunate during these rehearsals to be under the watchful eye of Mr Thomas Fuller (OA) and Mr Dewar Van Dijk both of whom are members of the 1st Medical Battalion Pipe Band.

Our drum corps were very fortunate to be invited to play with the 1 Med grade 4 band and is testament to the hard work they have put in so far this year.

In the band competition St Andrew’s College was placed 3rd behind Jeppe and Benoni.

The highlight of the day however was the triumph of the bass section who were voted best juvenile bass section of the competition.

There were also solo events at the gathering in which in which our pipers and drummers performed well. The most notable achievements were:

Michael Purchase’s 2nd in the silver piobaireachd*.

Zak Schlebusch’s 4th place in the gold piobaireachd.

and

Emily Campbell’s 1st place in the novice tenor drumming.

Thanks are due to the band for their commitment, hard work and impeccable behaviour during the tour. Thanks also to the leadership of Pipe Major Callum Southey. Finally a huge debt of gratitude is owed to Mr. Chris Terry (OA), Mr. Thomas Fuller (OA), and Mr Dewar Van Dijk for their enthusiasm, expert advice and encouragement.
