Rowing – Selborne Sprint and Buffalo Regatta

The St Andrew’s College Rowing Club attended the recent Selborne Sprints and Buffalo Regatta on the Buffalo River in East London this past weekend. The Club can be very happy with their results in both events. The Selborne Sprints Regatta is rowed over a short 500m course whilst the Buffalo Regatta is rowed over the standard 2000m and 1000m championship distances.

St Andrew’s College were successful in making the finals for most events for both regattas and were adjudged the overall point’s winners of the Selborne Sprints Regatta (just schools) and third overall in the Buffalo Regatta (schools and senior clubs). Highlights of the Selborne Sprints Regatta was the 1st place for the 2nd VIII, 1st place in the A Pairs, 1st place in the 2nd IV’s, 3rd place in the 1st VIII’s, in a very tight finish, 2nd place in the U15 Sculls and 2nd place in the U15 Quads.

In the Buffalo Regatta, raced in blustery, hot conditions, College again proved to be very competitive with the highlight being the incredibly close finish to the 1st VIIIs race where Bishop’s just managed to pip College into second place by 0.4 of a second, with the trailing boats very close behind. Unfortunately the very competitive 2nd VIII did not get to row their final, after winning their heat convincingly, due to lightning bringing racing to a halt for a period during the afternoon. The U15 Quad placed second, the U15 Octuple also second, William Counsell got bronze in the U15 Scull as did the U16 VIII.

With numbers at a high, the Club is showing good depth and can look forward to the SA Champs in two weeks’ time with confidence.
