The College U15A Tennis team travelled to Paarl to compete in the Boland Landbou U15 Tennis Festival from 4-6 February. 12 teams from all over the country took part and it is a competitive and exceptionally well run event. St Andrew’s College played their first match in very hot conditions against one of our old Eastern Cape rivals, Marlow. Our boys started well and won 5 of the 6 singles matches, leading to an overall win of 22-5. The next match was against Outeniqua, whom we had beaten two years ago in a play-off, but this year they were too strong and College only managed 6 sets to Outeniqua’s 21. The boys then enjoyed a break from the heat before the play-offs on Saturday morning. The first play-off match against Midstream would determine whether they compete for 5/6 or 7/8 in the last match, so this was a very important one. Our boys acquitted themselves very well and ran away for a relatively easy 15-7 win. Their opponents were Paarl Gimnasium, and after College had won all three the doubles matches, Paarl Gimnasium came back well to level the scores at 13-13. The final match between Dylan Bowker and his counterpart from Paarl Gim went down to the wire and ended in a tie breaker to decide the winner. Time was our enemy and we had to forfeit the tie break in order to get to the airport on time, giving Gim a 14-13 victory bumping College into 6th place. All in all the St Andrew’s College boys played brilliant tennis, showed plenty of spirit and sportsmanship and were wonderful ambassadors for College and we commend them for their efforts.

The Albany team travelled to Cradock this week to play against Midlands for their annual fixture. Justin Stoddart, Dylan Bowker, Ignus Potgieter, Murray Koster and Scott Cuthbert all took part and gained lots of experience against a very strong Midlands side. The overall results haven’t been released yet but we congratulate them for their effort and contribution to the team.
