College celebrates the Grade 8 Rite of Passage

Rick Melvill (OA 1976), with the help of his brother, Rob Melvill (OA 1973), Marguerite Poland (Honorary OA) and Günther Marx (Deputy Headmaster – Student Affairs) put together a powerful presentation with the analogy of the building of College’s reputation being like a relay race where each new intake gets to carry the baton for a full five years. The core idea of the presentation is to give the “Newboys” an inspirational and emotive look at the race that has already been run by those who have come before them and to instil in them a feeling of responsibility for the race ahead.

The Head Prefect of each House gave the presentation and thereafter all “Newboys” signed their names in the leather-bound register. After the induction ceremony into St Andrew’s College, the boys left the Antony Clark Andrean Resource Centre and were greeted by teachers and prefects, no longer as new boys but rather as new Andreans. When these boys leave in 2020 they will sign the register again signifying their journey into the next phase of their Andrean journey as Old Andreans.
